Music at Somers Congregational Church

United Church of Christ

We are excited to invite you to

First Annual Hymn Festival in Somers

Noted hymn writer/composer of sacred music, Al Fedak, will join us to talk about his hymn tunes and compositions for church choirs.

The theme of the afternoon will be "Caring for Creation."

Several of the hymns feature new texts sung to familiar tunes.

Mother earth will bless our songs.

Date: October 21st  3:00 PM

Church: Somers Congregational Church

599 Main St. Somers CT 06071

This invitation goes out to all people who enjoy singing, choir directors and their choirs, song leaders, instrumentalists and organists to make this event inclusive and collaborative in as many ways possible.  We are currently looking for one or two trumpeters and one flutist. Organists who would like to participate either as accompanists or soloists will play our wonderful Richards and Fowkes tracker instrument, installed in 2018.

We also invite singers to join us for the first 8 weeks of the season, up to and including being part of the host choir in the festival.

Rehearsals: Thursdays at 7 in the music room.

All are welcome.

Boyd Herforth, our Music Director and Organist

Boyd Herforth joined us as our Organist/Choir Director in May. He has a Masters' degrees in math and  Organ Performance.

In addition, he has done Master’s work in Music Therapy.

He taught high school math for more than 40 years in four countries, in private, public and religious institutions.

He served the Peace Corps in the Philippines and in Thailand, where he taught math and physics.

He has studied organ privately with Christa Rakich, our Artist in Residence, and attended the inaugural recital that she gave at church.

Her connection with Somers Congregational  prompted Boyd to apply to become music director here.

Boyd had served many years in several churches in eastern New York and has moved to Manchester from the Hudson Valley.

Not only is he a great organist, but also has played the trumpet since age 4.

His lovely wife, Nancy, is an excellent singer.  She will be joining our choir.

He has a son, Bruce who lives in the Hudson Valley and a daughter, Anna, who lives in Brookline MA.
